Optical Ground Wire (OPGW)

Optical Ground Wire (OPGW) is a specialized type of cable used in overhead power transmission lines. It serves a dual purpose:

1. Electrical Function: OPGW acts as a ground wire, providing shielding and protection to the transmission line from lightning strikes and electrical faults. It helps to safely dissipate electrical surges to the ground, ensuring the stability and safety of the power transmission system.

2. Telecommunication Function: Embedded within the OPGW are optical fibers, which are used for data transmission. These fibers enable high-speed communication, allowing utilities to monitor and control the power grid, as well as lease bandwidth to telecommunication companies for additional revenue.
